Afrikeniyan Tours & Safaris - Information Guide

The Marathon is held annually to raise money for conservation within the Mara ecosystem as well as raise awareness on the plight of its stakeholders. All proceeds from the marathon will go towards education, provision of clean water, healthcare, sanitation and conservation projects for communities living in the Mara ecosystem.

The Marathon's popularity has grown since its inception in the year 2009. From its humble beginnings with 352 participants, the number has been growing steadily over the years, and this year the Marathon has thousands of confirmed participants! Going under different themes each year, the Marathon attracts participants from as far as Italy, Sweden, United States, among others.

The Masai Mara Marathon's attraction stems in part from the fact that runners cruise in the midst of wildlife such as wildebeet, gazelles and zebras unlike most marathons which are held in urban areas. A highly exciting and unique experience indeed! Definitely not to be missed.

This year's Marathon will take place on Saturday 5th October 2013 at the Lemek Conservancy, Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

This is a perfect opportunity for giving back to the community, and showing commitment to its development.

At the beginning of Kenya's great Northern Wilderness lies Lake Bogoria. The lake is the heart of an arid landscape, in the shadow of the dramatic walls of the Siracho Range.  The soda waters of the lake attract massive flocks of Flamingo, and the lake is often carpeted with pink.

The 32 sq km lake is still volcanically active, and the Western shore is lined with spouting geysers, spurting steam and bubbling geothermal pools. Fresh water springs at the lake edge attract an abundance of birds and wildlife. There are many Fish Eagles, which often prey on the local flamingos. The shores are always lined with Gazelle, Zebra, Baboons and this is one of the best places to see Greater Kudu

Day 1

Depart from Nairobi at 8a.m. Drive through the rift valley escarpment and stop at the viewpoint to feast your eyes on the beautiful valley. Reach the camp at 1 p.m. Freshen up, have lunch and relax up to 4 p.m. Leave for a game drive and return back to the camp at 6 p.m. Enjoy a warm bonfire after dinner after which you may retire to the tents.

Day 2

Wake up to a sumptuous breakfast at 8.30 a.m. Leave for a full day game drive where you will visit the Mara/Talek river. Have your packed lunch near the river. Return back to the camp by 4 p.m. Have dinner,chat with the other guests, relax by the bonfire and then retire to the tents.

Day 3

Enjoy a refreshing early morning game drive from 6 a.m up to 8.30 a.m. Return to the camp for breakfast and check out by 10.00a.m after which you return back to nairobi by 5p.m

Lake Nakuru  is Kenya's most visited National Park. Located 160km and 2½ hours from Nairobi, the park is an important Ramsar site and home to thousands of different bird species.
The 188sq km Lake Nakuru is the only KWS-administered reserve that is fully enclosed. Once just a bird sanctuary, Lake Nakuru is now the best place in Kenya to see the highly protected black and white rhino. Among other animals found in the park include rhino, lion, leopard, flamingos, Egyptian geese, waterbuck, giraffe, hyena, buffalo, baboons, vervet monkeys, gazelles.

DETAILED ITINERY

Pick up from your residence in the morning at 6.30 am.  Depart for Lake Nakuru National Park through The Great African Rift Valley arriving with game drive around 8.30 am until Lunch time.
